Siege of Limerick

History 2013

IFDA Tournament of the Year 2013

Under new management, 2013’s version of the Siege was the biggest and best we had ever seen. A 24 team Open division and 6 team Women’s division included exciting new foreign additions from years previous. A higher quality of Ultimate was brought to the competition, particularly by Open finalists Sussex Mohawks, and SOTG winners Gentle Ultimate. The inclusion of the Irish Under-23 squad, split into 2 teams, Glasgow Ultimate, Siege regulars NUTS of Amsterdam, as well as the usual suspects from Irish college and club Ultimate, proved that the Siege had now become the hottest Ultimate competition Ireland has to offer.

A thrilling final in the Open division saw Ireland U23 Y overcome worthy opponents Sussex Mohawks 14-9. A Corkonian grudge match between UCC and Juice in the Plate final led to one of the greatest comebacks ever witnessed on an Ultimate pitch; coming from 12-3 down, Juice won 13-12.

In the Women’s division, UCC edged Rebel 10-9 in a very close-fought final. UCC also took spirit, while the Gentle boys won spirit in the Open Division.

A magnificent weekend of Ultimate, with great weather and top quality synthetic grass pitches in use again, as well as great parties and unstoppable banter, the Siege of Limerick had proved it was an unmissable event on the Ultimate Frisbee calendar!
